What is color analysis? The complete guide.

Color analysis is the reason some colors make you glow and others make you look tired. Here is exactly how it works, and how to find your own palette in minutes.

Quick answer

Color analysis is a method that finds the colors that best match your natural skin, hair and eye coloring. It places you in one of 12 seasons using three traits: hue (warm or cool), value (light or deep) and chroma (bright or soft).

How color analysis works

Every face has a natural coloring made of three things: the undertone of your skin, the color of your hair and the color of your eyes. Color analysis compares that coloring to groups of colors and finds the group that harmonizes with it.

When a color harmonizes with you, your skin looks clearer, shadows under the eyes soften and your eyes look brighter. When it clashes, the opposite happens. Analysts call this effect the color wearing you.

The method is often called seasonal color analysis because the color groups are named after the four seasons, then split into 12 more precise sub seasons.

The 3 traits: hue, value and chroma

Modern color analysis measures three properties of your coloring. Each one comes from color theory, and each one shapes your palette.

Trait What it measures The two ends
Hue The undertone of your coloring Warm (golden) or cool (blue, pink)
Value How light or dark your overall coloring is Light or deep
Chroma How clear or muted your coloring is Bright or soft

Your strongest trait decides your season family and sub season. For example, if softness is your strongest trait and you lean warm, you are a Soft Autumn. If depth is strongest and you lean cool, you are a Deep Winter.

The 12 color seasons

The four seasons each split into three, giving 12 seasons in total. Each one is named after its strongest trait.

Family Seasons Shared quality
Spring Bright Spring, True Spring, Light Spring Warm and clear
Summer Light Summer, True Summer, Soft Summer Cool and soft
Autumn Soft Autumn, True Autumn, Deep Autumn Warm and soft
Winter Deep Winter, True Winter, Bright Winter Cool and clear

Older systems only used four seasons, which left many people stuck between two. The 12 season system fixes that by adding a second trait to each result.

Why color analysis is worth it

  • You look healthier and more rested without changing your makeup routine.
  • You shop faster and waste less. A palette tells you what to skip before you reach the fitting room.
  • Your wardrobe works together. When every piece comes from one palette, almost everything matches.
  • Makeup and hair choices get easier. Your season points you to lipstick families, blush tones and hair colors that flatter.

How to find your season

There are three ways to get your colors done, from free to premium:

  1. Take a color analysis quiz. Our free 12 question color analysis quiz checks the same traits an analyst checks and gives you a season in about 2 minutes.
  2. Try draping at home. Hold colored fabrics under your face in daylight and compare. Our at home guide walks you through it, and the color try-on lets you do it on a selfie.
  3. Book an in person analyst. A trained analyst drapes you with dozens of fabric swatches. See what it costs and how to find one near you.

Common color analysis myths

Myth: your skin tone decides your season. Skin depth is only one clue. Two people with the same skin tone can be different seasons because of their undertone and contrast.

Myth: you can never wear colors outside your palette. You can. Your palette matters most near your face. Pants, shoes and bags have far less effect.

Myth: your season changes with a tan or hair dye. Your natural coloring stays in the same family. A tan can shift how deep you look, but your undertone stays the same.
